The novel at the center of it Angels Dance on the Head of a Pin is a sweeping, immersive story set almost entirely inside the Sky Room, an oval Victorian greenhouse restaurant sitting atop Chicago’s seventeen-story Majestic Hotel, which is days away from demolition. A confrontation unfolds in that empty, abandoned space, and things don’t stay quiet for long.

A violent thunderstorm closes in on the Sky Room. The protagonist works through the space past abandoned fake plants and ebony oak pilasters searching for a character named Willie. Sheet lightning rips across the sky and catches her: perched on a safety parapet, the tails of her trench coat whipping in the gale that rises from Quincy Street below. She’s crouched over a sheer drop; her face washed in jaundiced yellow by a flashing traffic light. Something between surreal and unbearably tense, less about fear than about the choice at its center.

Then lightning strikes, a nearby demolition derrick. The heat blast is enough Willie loses her footing on the wet glazed tile and starts going over. The protagonist launches from a doorway, catching the tail of the trench coat at the last possible second as she slips past the building’s edge. The fabric goes around an arm in a hard twist, a makeshift hawser. What follows isn’t a fight so much as two people refusing to let go of each other above seventeen stories of nothing a fitting glimpse of a story that, underneath it all, is less about violence than about the hope for peace that survives it.
