Something Gained: 7 Shifts to Be Stronger, Smarter & Happier After Divorce is a Big Shift Away from Typical Post-Divorce Mindset

Newport Beach, United States - June 4, 2018 /PressCable/ —

June 4, 2018, Newport Beach, CA: The problem with how we usually recover from divorce is that we don’t. Yes, we move past the emotional crisis point. But, too often after divorce, our Ex becomes the enemy. In fact, part of how we try to make ourselves feel better is to tell our stories, on repeat, with our Ex in a starring role as the villain. We get through it somehow, but we often come out bruised and bitter on the other side. We take our stories with us when we pick another partner and we often end up with same problems, again.

Deb Purdy, author of Something Gained: 7 Shifts to Be Stronger, Smarter & Happier After Divorce, shares that making the decision to revise your divorce story is the single most important thing you can do to recover from divorce and thrive. “Divorce is not good or bad, it just is,” said Purdy. “Reframing divorce from a failure of character to a catalyst we can use to know ourselves better, heal our wounds and improve our lives, opens us up to reaping the gifts that are inherent in the experience. You have a choice about how you want to use your divorce experience. You have the power to reinvent divorce for yourself in a way that makes you stronger, happier and more peaceful.”

The Current Divorce Culture Needs a Reboot

We tend to feel some degree of shame when it comes to divorce. No matter how or why it ended, there is some embarrassment about it and a lingering sense of failure. “When it comes to divorce, the societal consensus is that something has gone terribly wrong. The ‘divorce = failure’ meme is so deeply embedded into our modern culture that we rarely question it,” said Purdy. “This toxic cultural stew of shame, blame and judgment keeps people stuck, sometimes for years, in bitterness and regrets. But it doesn’t have to be that way.”

Reinventing Divorce

Purdy’s book invites her readers to transform their relationship to divorce itself using what she calls the “no shame, no blame, reframe” model which looks at divorce as a master level course in our curriculum at “ME school.” We find our way to self-compassion and gratitude toward our former partners for reflecting to us what we most needed to learn.

“By revising our individual and collective perspectives, we can find things to celebrate about what we learned and what we gained from our marriage and divorce experiences,” said Purdy. “The truth is, if they allow it, divorcing couples have embarked on the fast-track to transformation, self-awareness and healing.”
